Do You Believe in God?

Most people believe in God.

But the next question is more important: Which god do you believe in? And then many different and diverging things will be said. Who is God? A higher power. A nature spirit. A Father. A Mother. Many different names will be brought forward.

Many names, many gods.

Nowadays it is considered acceptable—even preferable—to say that all these gods are actually one and the same God. Such a view is a hopeful attempt at making peace among the followers of different religions. If we’re all worshiping the same God, we should accept one another and try to get along!

One thing that we can say in response is that this drastically oversimplifies every world religion. All distinctives are taken away, and we’re left with only a generic spirituality.

Another thing to say is that we don’t have to be scared to judge. If believing in God is an important, meaningful, even eternally significant thing, then we must try to get it right.

So we ask: Does this or that religion give a consistent and coherent account of what we see in this world? Does it really answer the big questions of life? And does its god have a real and positive impact on believers?

I don’t intend to put every god under the microscope, but in the coming series of short articles I want to consider the God who is revealed in Scripture.

Who is He? What account does He give of this world? How does this God answer the big questions of life?

And to explore this, we’ll consider the Apostles’ Creed. This is the earliest creed of the Christian church, and it offers a powerful glimpse of the God we meet in the Bible. He is a God to believe in with all your heart and soul!

Scripture Reading: Psalm 135:13-21

Prayer: LORD God, you alone are God. You are great, and greatly to be praised. Help me to know you more, and so to trust and worship you alone. Amen.
