What You Were Made For

It’s good to go back to the beginning.

The beginning of something sets the tone for what follows. This is true for earthly projects, which we always hope will start off on the right foot. If we botch the beginning, it can be very hard to put things right again.

So what was the beginning of this world like?

With the Apostles’ Creed, we affirm, “I believe in God the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.”

If the beginning was a random event, we might conclude that everything that follows is haphazard, too. But if the beginning of this world was a wise and intentional act, then we can know that all of life has a purpose - that we too, are here for a reason.

So we rejoice that the living God created the heavens and the earth. God merely spoke, and it all came into being.

This is entirely beyond our understanding. We can’t make something out of nothing, much less command it to happen, or ever do things on the grand scale that God has done! But it was as Psalm 33:6 sings,

By the word of the LORD were the heavens made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth.

That was one way of creating. To make us humans, God employed a different method.

The LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life. Then God took one of Adam’s ribs and made it into Eve, a woman.

This manner of creation shows that we’re very different from the rest of what God made. The Bible says that we’re formed into “God’s image,” made into the glorious crown of his creation.

God created us to know and worship him on this earth. The Father created us so that we would give him praise as our Creator, and so that we would trust him as our Saviour in Jesus Christ.

It is what we were made for. So let us do so now!
